I used to feel overwhelmed when I thought of decorating my kitchen, so I put off thinking about it for a long time. I’m pretty sure that I would break out in cold sweats when I thought about coordinating colors. It can be stressful when thinking about choosing the right color palette for a kitchen setting. Everyone is so different. I’m going to show you how to choose the right color palette for your home, and let you take a peek into my kitchen.

Kitchen Decorating Tips

Begin with the right theme.

Choosing a theme is the hardest part. Once you have this chosen, color scheme and decoration comes much easier. When I was choosing my theme for my kitchen, I had to think about what the general feeling I wanted when people walk into this room. I wanted the room to feel open and bright with pops of colors that invoke feelings of happiness. With that in mind, I chose the theme: “Country Chic”. I love country themed kitchens and eventually when Adam and I get out of our tiny apartment, I would love a big stainless steel sink with a window above it and pretty lace curtains. But for now, I am working with what I have.

Here is an idea of how my kitchen will look one day — This country theme kitchen with incredible hardwood floors (the stuff dreams are made of) was designed by Joe & Stephanie Norman:

Choosing the perfect colors.

I knew what colors I wanted right when we got married: white, cobalt blue, sunshine yellow. They are bright and fun and they fit well with my theme. I knew they would be easy to match decorations to, which was a big deal. I didn’t want to spend hours trying to match a difficult color. My palette turned out something like this:

Now. Decorate!

I was so excited to start getting things to decorate. The first item we received as a gift for our wedding was a beautiful cobalt blue kitchen aid. It has made the PERFECT addition to our counter top. I love it. It is the exact color we wanted, so we ended up getting the Kitchenaid hand mixer, immersion blender and food processor in the same color for our wedding as well! Now we have pops of blue all over our kitchen, which is more than ideal.

Next, we chose the plates and glassware. We received these adorable mason jar cups from my dear friend at my bridal shower and I use them every chance I get. They go so sweet with our bright yellow plates. We have matching yellow bowls and mugs as well. The color brings so much light into our kitchen.

Disclaimer: I love puns. So when I saw this dish towel….Adam looked at me, rolled his eyes and put it in the cart. Not only did it go with our colors but it is so funny that I laugh every time I walk in the kitchen. I can’t help myself.

I’m still looking for a sunflower clock to hang over my kitchen sink. It would be the perfect addition but I haven’t been able to find one that matches what I see in my head. If you know of where to find one, let me know!

Choosing your perfect color palette can take some time. Use these 4 questions when deciding how to decorate your kitchen to narrow down what you want:

  1. What do you want the over feel of the kitchen to be? Urban, old-fashioned, or bohemian? Check out this post if you aren’t sure what your decorating style is.
  2. What colors go well with your cabinets, counters and floors? Not all things go together. If you have dark wood, try lighter colors to balance it out and vice versa. We have white cabinets, so I wanted pops of color.
  3. Will your colors go with the rest of your home, or at least the rooms that are visible from the kitchen? I am all about a home being cohesive. When you walk from the kitchen into the living room, does it feel like two different people decorated? It should all flow nicely. I added cobalt blue and yellow throw pillows to our couch to tie the rooms together.
  4. Does it feel like you and your family? This is what it boils down to. Does it reflect the personality of your family? A kitchen is a place where families come together — to cook, to eat, to pack picnic lunches. Make sure it reflects that.
