Happy #beautymonday, friends!! It’s starting to get warmer, so I’m pulling out all my fabulous colorful eye makeup for the summer. I’m talking yellows, hot pinks, blues, greens – the works. It can be hard to wear crazy colored eye shadow without feeling like a clown. BUT – I promise that you can successfully pull off these colors and looks. Confidence is totally key. 😉 BUT – if you want to ease into the colorful eye makeup trend – here are some tips to getting into it slowly until you are fully comfortable! Let’s get into it.
10 Tips For Pulling Off COLORFUL Makeup For The Summer
ONE: Invest in a good eye primer.
Eye primer is KEY for pulling off colorful makeup looks. There is nothing worse than getting attention for an eye makeup looks – for ALL the wrong reasons. Make sure your look stays in place all day long with an awesome primer. My favorite for bright and colorful eye looks is my Urban Decay Primer Potion in “freebase”. It’s white, so you can be sure all of your shadow colors stand out.
TWO: Start with either top lid or bottom lid if you are nervous to go all in.
Go neutral with a pop of color! I like to play it up with really bright colors either on the top, or the bottom lid, and then go completely neutral on the opposite side. It helps to balance out the color and is a great way to dip your toes in!
THREE: Go with a colored mascara for something so subtle.
I love this! I will often times add just a tinge of colored mascara on my lower lashes because it’s just enough to make a difference in your look and have people wonder what’s different about you today!
FOUR: Start with something less obvious than eyes: go for a peach or purple toned blush!
This is a SUPER FUN way to add color to your look! I love playing with blush – last summer was the season of yellow blush, and it was super pretty and subtle. This year I am going to start playing with really pretty peach tones and maybe add some purple or magenta shades in as well!!!
FIVE: Play up your lips to coordinate with your outfit.
This is the EASIEST way to add color to your look – lipstick. It’s typically less scary than adding a bunch of color to your eyes, and you can just wipe it off halfway through the day if you decide it’s too much for you. It’s the least amount of commitment possible when it comes to makeup and color.
SIX: Contrast with your skin tone for maximum effect.
Try to do colors that really contrast with your skin tone if you want to stand out! I love doing purples, greens, hot pinks. They are SUPER bright against my pale skin, which means they have the exact pop I want them to have to make a statement on the street. If you have darker skin – try a fun yellow, teal or neon pink to really make an impact.
SEVEN: Try using bright colors as an accent to start with and work your way up.
If you are still nervous to play with color all out – try just adding little accent colors on your eyes. A subtle pink crease or waterline color is what I find really does the trick here. The waterline adds that perfect pop of color without having it all over your eyes. Try doing that first before adding a bunch of shadow!
EIGHT: Keep your foundation routine soft and subtle so the focus is on the color.
This goes for your lips, too! Instead of trying to pile on as much color as humanely possible – keep the rest of your face neutral so that your colors really shine. Keep your foundation nice and dewy, with a little bit of bronzer and blush and a nice nude lip gloss to top it off.
NINE: Blend, blend, blend.
Again – you don’t want get attention for the wrong reasons. Make sure your looks are blended before leaving the house! There is nothing worse than getting to your location and realizing your have harsh lines or unblended edges. YIKES.
TEN: OWN IT.
You can’t rock anything if you don’t feel confident. You have to go into this with your head held high – feeling TOTALLY confident with where you are at and what you are wearing. People won’t look at you nearly as strangely as you think they are going to. I promise.
Hopefully this helps you feel more confident and excited to play with color this season!! I always wish more people would step out of their comfort zone and rock some fun colors on their face.

Your talent just astounds me! You’re so good at makeup it hurts. I gotta remember to get a good primer. My eye makeup always gets creasy and greasy when the weather warms up!

I love colored mascara and/or eyeliner when I’m craving something funky and fun! I know my lash extensionist even does colored eyelashes for her clients sometimes and it is GORGEOUS. I kinda wanna try purple with my brown eyes!

This look reminds me of Jem & the Holograms! Such a cute look
Oh my goodness, your eye makeup is amazing!! I wish I was that daring! I will say my eye makeup for a recent 80’s themed party looked very similar but that’s probably the only time I’d feel ok going so bold. But you make it look amazing!
