What Is A Jade Roller – and WHY Should You Be Using It

What Is A Jade Roller?

Jade rollers have just become mainstream in the USA – but they’ve actually been around in Asian skincare regimens for thousands of years. Like most things, we are just late to the party. They look like little hand-held face massagers and come in a variety of different colors and material. Some are quartz, some are jade, some are crystal. They can be “infused” with different healing properties – such as swelling reduction, blood circulation boost, better absorption of skincare. Jade rollers specifically are supposed to help with increased blood circulation and the reduction of eye bags. They all have at least one roller stone at the top, while others (like mine) also have a mini roller at the bottom of the handle, too.

Apparently, they are best used cold and luckily, mine stays pretty cold just sitting on my vanity. I have never put mine in the fridge, but you certainly can to keep it even chillier. The colder it is, the more it can help with decreasing any puffiness around the face (apparently). I apply it prior to my facial spray and makeup primer so that they can absorb into the skin more evenly. I mainly think this works best if you use it like a massage tool. I roll upwards from my chin to my temple, across my forehead, under my eyes, on the sides of my nose and down my neck. It’s also said that jade rolling can aid with lymph node drainage, which can be helpful if you have a cold or allergies.

Should I Be Using It?

That’s kind of up to you. The most obvious and well-known benefits of the jade roller is reducing inflammation and puffiness. If your roller is cold, you can add reducing the appearance of under eye circles to that list as well. Some experts says with consistent usage, it will also aid in brightening your complexion, reducing the appearance of fine line, and tightening pores (although there aren’t any studies that scientifically back that up). While all of those are really great, I also just find it really relaxing and a nice way to start my makeup routine.

Some dermatologists say you do need to be careful and make sure you are cleaning your jade roller regularly, otherwise you could transmit bacteria, and aggravate acne. In addition, if you press too firmly into your skin, you could also break capillaries and damage your facial skin. BUT – if done gently, it really can reduce inflammation and puffiness though – as any massage can.

So is it any different than a facial massage you might get at a spa? Probably not – but you can do it in the comfort of your own home, which is nice! You can shop this one HERE for only $14!
