Happy FRI-YAY! It’s mid-march now which means only one thing: SPRING BREAK! For those of you who are still in school or who have kiddos in school, this is usually the time of year you take to get a little break from the school year and enjoy a vacation with your family. There are TON of popular Spring Break spots in the United States – but today, we are going to be branching out from the top ten usually spots for Spring Break and going over the best little-known beachy spring break spots in the United States. If swarming crowds of people and drunk adults aren’t really your thing – these spots are really going to call your name! Check out the best unknown spring break spots in the US below:
The BEST Unknown Spring Break Spots In The United States
Number One: Grand Isle, Louisiana
While you may be tempted to vacation in the lively city of New Orleans (and I get the temptation) during March and April – think about instead visiting Grand Isle, Louisiana! It’s about 100 miles south of New Orleans and it has beautiful sandy beaches, water activities and beautiful scenic views.
Number Two: Tybee Island, Georgia
If rustic charm is your thing, look for further than Tybee Island, Georgia! Get your peaches ready for this beach town. It’s a little bit east of Savannah and is a picturesque island that offers a less bustling feel that it’s big city neighbors. There are stretches of beautiful beaches and salt marshes ready to take your vacay from 0-100.
Number Three: Gulf Shores, Alabama
If you’ve never been to Gulf Shores (Orange Beach), Alabama – you are missing out! This is an awesome little escape from busy city beach towns with a ton of outdoor and water recreation and amazing food (they are well known for their delicious seafood). If you go in April – you can take part in the Mullet Toss and their annual Beach Party. The beaches are also well known for their crisp white sand! It’s the perfect getaway.
Number Four: Folly Beach, South Carolina
Only 15 minutes away from Charleston, SC is an adorable little surf town called Folly Beach. It has expansive beaches, comfortable cottages, and a laid-back and casual feel. Locals refer to it as the “Edge of America” because it’s easy to forget about the rest of the world in this darling little town.
Number Five: Golden Isles, Georgia
If you don’t need anything more than the ocean – Golden Isles, Georgia is going to be the best Spring Break location for you and your family. It has a collection of islands such as: St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Little St. Simons Island. These barrier islands house historic lighthouses, golf courses, tennis courts, boat sailing, dirt racing and quaint locally own shops. It’s one of the south’s best-kept secrets of the south.
Number Six: Atlantic Beach, South Carolina
Can you tell I’m a fan of South Carolina? If you are looking for a spot with surf, sand and sun – Atlantic Beach is for you. There are dozens of water activities to take part in with your family and when you are done with the water, they have bikes for rent that you can ride around the city. They are also known for their wild ponies so if you’re lucky – you can catch a glimpse of them galloping around!
Number Seven: The Big Island: Hawaii
I am currently trying to convince my husband to move us here in the near future. The temperatures range around 70-80 all year long so you can almost 100% count on amazing weather when going for spring break. Beginning of April is the start of high season so the coastline and volcanoes are in full, beautiful view.
Number Eight: Asheville, North Carolina
So it isn’t North Carolina — but it’s still a Carolina and I still love it. Asheville is nestled right into the Blue Ridge Mountains so it is a destination city with southern charm and beauty. Lonely Planet also voted Asheville the best city to live in in the United States. There are dozens of craft breweries if that’s your kinda thing (more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the country). There is a thriving food and arts scene so it’s a hipsters dream come true. There is also the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is you like to hike scenic trails.
Number Nine: Pacific Grove, California
Flipping over the the other side of the country, we’ve got Pacific Grove, California. It was voted one of the most beautiful beach towns in California. It’s home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (I’m a fan of aquariums, personally) and it’s one of the top aquariums in the country. Within walking distance is the Asilomar State Beach, where you can explore tide pools, surf, rent kayaks, and see sea otters up close.
Number Ten: Chincoteague, Virginia
This is a quaint summer beach town, home to the Cincoteague National Wildlife Refuge where you can peek on the wild ponies that live there in their natural habitat. You have an opportunity to rent bicycles and binoculars to explore the island as well. If you venture just outside of Chincoteague, the NASA Visitor Center is a great place to learn about rockets and space shuttles launched just a few miles away!

I hope this guide helps you organize your spring break trip this year to a lesser known – but still JUST AS FUN – as any popular spring break location. They’ve got the small town, beachy vibe you need to unwind you’re looking for, I promise.

Ooh fun locations. I’d recommend Pawley’s Island in South Carolina. It’s close to Myrtle Beach.
I’ve never actually done a spring vacation before but these places all sound amazing. I am familiar with Pacific Grove as I’m a California native but I’ve never been there. Looks like I have some vacations to book in the near future! Thank you!
These all look like so much fun! I much prefer to go to out of the way, less-considered places for a more authentic experience. Looks like I have some new ones to add to my list.
