We all know that there are a LOT of beauty trends out there that make us raise our eyebrows and say, “but who would ever wear that???” Well, I was doing some research this past weekend on the latest beauty trends (to stay updated and all that — I have a fear of missing out on new and exciting makeup trends), and I came across a couple that looked good on the models but I just couldn’t decide if the every day woman could pull it off without getting weird looks at the grocery story.

My goal for this post was to set out and tackle 5 beauty trends of 2016 and wear them for an entire day to see if we really can pull them off. The beauty trends I chose are as follows:

Strobing

Sunset Smokey Eye

Cobalt Blue Eyeliner

Ombre Lips

Red lips : bare face

Day One: Red Lips/Bare Face

How I Felt It Would Go: I felt like this would be an easy one to do and I didn’t feel like I would get very many stares. I decided to bun my hair to add an air of sophistication and really jumped on board with a super bold lip (I used this lip stain to make sure it didn’t budge one bit) and only concealer and one coat on mascara. I feel like I’m going to be a tiny bit self conscious because I normally wear a lot more makeup (eyeliner, contour, foundation, highlighter, etc) and my eyes are going to feel really bare — which is the point, I know I know.

How It Actually Went: Well. I just want to say that I tried. I really did. I know that it says bare face…guys I know. I feel bad enough. But I had to do eyebrows and a coat of mascara and I had to do concealer because I didn’t want to offend everyone I came in contact with. So while it was subtle, I didn’t really do a “bare face”. Please still love me. Even still, I felt really self conscious because I wasn’t wearing a full eye. I also had a hard time because I didn’t wear any bronzer or highlight so hello baby cheeks. And another thing is I’m not tan so maybe if I was tan and not super pale this would work better? Tomorrow will be a better day.

Day Two: Sunset Smokey Eye

How I Felt It Would Go: I was super excited for this one!!! I love smokey eyes and I love the rose gold trend that is happening right now. I feel really confident with this look and I think the fact that I am on the pale side with warm undertones really help to pull of the warmer shades of gold and pinks that I will put on my eyes. All in all, I feel really good about doing this and couldn’t wait to show it off.

How It Actually Went: I really love this look. I went a tiny bit lighter on my eyes than the picture showed because I wanted to look less like I was going to the night club and more like me. But I used the Naked 3 palette and used the colors with a damp brush to really bring out the brightness of the color. I feel like this is super wearable and it would be super flattering on every skin tone. This instagram look is a winner.

Day Three: Cobalt Liner

How I Felt It Would Go: I thought I would get some stares because it just isn’t a common eyeliner color. I really am unsure about how to style this with my current wardrobe, but will probably end up doing a neutral eyeshadow with my classic cat eye (except instead of black…we went cobalt) and then pairing it with cream colored top and light blue jeans. I wanted all of the focus to be on my eyes. Also I want to look just like Samantha Ravndahl (youtube and beauty blogger..find her on instagram: @ssssamantha) but we all know that isn’t possible.

How It Actually Went: This wasn’t the worst, but it definitely isn’t the most wearable look I have ever tried. I decided on my white and black top with light jeans and blue earrings to match my eyeliner. I feel like I got a lot of strange looks, but it may have just been me feeling self conscious. One of my friends said “don’t advocate this look for everyone because it is really hard to pull off” and another one said “You look amazing, so vogue”…so mixed signals all around. I feel like if you have brown eyes this look would bring them out, but I have kind of muddy green eyes so I didn’t feel like the blue really did anything for them. In the end: is this great for anyone and everyone? Probably not. Should that stop you from trying it? Also probably not.

Day Four: Ombre Lips

How I Felt It Would Go: I will admit, I was kind of stoked to learn how to do this trend. I see so many supermodels and celebrities ROCK it and I just want to be like them, you know? I am a known lover of lipstick and I have about 4 shades that I rotate between in the summer, so I figured it would be kind of cool to be able to change that up subtly.

How It Actually Went: This one was kind of fun. It would have worked better if I had more of a baby doll pink to mix with my hot pink. Regardless, I got a lot of compliments on this look today, and I feel like it made my lips look a little bit more plump. I would love to try this with a light/dark purple in the fall. So. Is this look wearable for the average lady? I say yes!! If you use a lip brush it makes application super easy and if you do a subtle ombre, it’s very pretty.

Day Five: Strobing

How I Felt It Would Go: I think this one will be pretty subtle. I usually go heavier on the bronzer and lighter on the highlighter because I tend to get oily and I never want my face to start off looking shiny like that. So I don’t have a lot of hopes for this. Truthfully, I think I will look more greasy that highlight-y.

How It Actually Went: I was right on most accounts with this one. It was fairly subtle, and it did look a little bit oily (which I try to avoid like the plague). Mostly, I think I had a hard time because I’m pretty pale. If I were a little bit more tan, I think the highlighter would have stood out more as a highlight and not as just oily skin. So I think what we all learned here is that I need to get a tan. Also I felt like my face was too full because I didn’t have my bronzer on and that slims my face out. So is this look wearable for our everyday woman? I think yes. For summer, when you have a little bit of a tan and you are looking for a more natural alternative to a full face of makeup, this is a good go-to look.

Okay so what did we learn from this experiment of mine? I think we learned that some trends are totally wearable for our average woman….and some trends should, in my opinion, stay on instagram and off our face. I think we also learned that you can rock whatever trend you want to rock. These trends can be really fun and different and they change up your regular makeup routine. What I want you guys to realize is that it isn’t just the instagram queens and makeup artists of the world that can pull off popular trends. Go kill it, pretty people.

  1. I love how you organized this post. The blue eyeliner isn’t my thing but with all the looks I think it’s about your personality when wearing them whether you get looks or not. My favorite is the bold lip!

  2. I totally don’t know how people have the guts to wear it, but I actually love the cobalt eyeliner on you! You totally pull it off! And you’re killin’ that smokey eye!

  3. I love this post! I’m all about high fashion and trends, but you’re totally right – not all of them seem wearable for an everyday look. I too love the golden-sunset eye look, and I am interested in trying the red lip/bare face for myself. I would have to do my brows too though haha

  4. I love all of these that you did! It makes me want to do it as well. I have done strobing before and I love it. As far as the bare face with red lips, I am right there with you on the whole having a bare face. I couldn’t do it. That blue eyeliner looks amazing on you! Def not an everyday look but still awesome, as well as the Sunset Smoky Eye.

  5. I am loving the red lips/bare face look right now. Doesn’t look as great on me because I haven’t found the right shade of red…yet. But I am working on it!

    1. The perfect shade of red can be hard to find! Start by looking at your undertones. Cool undertones can wear a more true red while warm undertones tend to look better in an orange-y red 🙂

  6. You look so cute in all of these! 🙂 I am totally a plain jane when it comes to makeup and usually just wear a little foundation and mascara. But you are rocking these looks and inspiring me to be a little braver! Love it!

  7. I really love the bare faced, bold lip look. It’s my go to for long days…and I do a complete bare face :p. I’m sure some people would rather me use something else ;). I really love this bright eyeliner thing too…you’ve inspired me to try it out

  8. Super fun post! I can’t wait to try the sunset smokey eye. You pulled it off and look amazing!
