Happy #FASHIONWEDNESDAY, folks! It’s time for another #ootd and style inspiration for this time of year. It’s still cold here – and will be for a while – so I am doing my best to stay warm with layers on layers! One of my favorite way to layer chic-ly is with denim jackets. However, that can get boring and stale if you are wearing the same blue denim jacket day in and day out, so I’m starting to introduce colored denim into my wardrobe. I’m not a HUGE fan of colored denim pants – but I do love a really good colored denim jacket and I am loving this red one from Francesca’s. Let’s dive into it.

Style Tip One: Classic or trendy?

This depends on you, girlfriend! Are you all about the NOW and what’s currently trending or do you prefer to stick with pieces that will last you longer than a year tops? The jacket I’m wearing is definitely more on the trendy side with the peplum detailing but I really love it. I think I’ll be able to get a few seasons out of it at least. I love the bright poppy color, and I love the way it hugs my waist. Most denim jackets are a bit boxy – and this totally isn’t which is IDEAL.

If you prefer more classic, look for black, olive green, or tan as opposed to the traditional denim. Those colors will never go out of style!

Style Tip Two: Pair with a fitted top.

I chose to pair this with a cream and floral top. It’s SO cute and SO comfortable. I love pairing denim with flowy tops because, like I said above, they tend to be really boxy on me, and I don’t want to look wider than I am. This ensures you still show off the parts of you that you love best, while still layering and feeling fashionable.

Other options if you DON’T want to go with a top like this (which I totally get) would be a cute sweater (maybe one that’s a little thinner in the sleeves so you don’t feel bulky), a loose graphic tee, or crew neck sweatshirt!

Style Tip Three: Dark denim for the winter win.

If you’ve been around here for my style posts a while – you’ll know I don’t subscribe to light denim in the winter except in VERY rare occasions. I am a dark denim in winter kinda gal. I think it’s classy and adds a bit of an edge to every outfit to have SUPER dark wash denim. I will always love it!

I paired this look with my favorite Dish Denim jeans – and they ROCKED. They are high waisted and so cute with just about everything. They compliment the bright tones of the jacket, and perfectly oppose the light colors of the striped top. When choosing which denim to go with here – avoid distressed and super light washes for the most eye-catching effect.

Style Tip Four: Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.

I know diamonds are supposed to be a girl’s best friend but can ALL accessories be my best friend? 😉 I love anything that sparkles. Pair a fun statement necklace or statement earrings with this look to offset the bold single color of the denim jacket. You can stand to get a little bit loud with your jewelry here. 

Alternatively, go with a really fun shoe or hat! If loud jewelry isn’t quite your thing, that’s totally fine! Accessorize with a floppy winter hat or wide-brimmed fedora (I promise they are making a comeback). For shoes, pick a cute bootie that is both comfortable and fun. I chose my cream booties because not only are they one of the cutest shoes I own – but they also match the cream of my top perfectly and I couldn’t stop myself from being matchy!
