Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples—it’s the perfect excuse to shower your little ones with love! One of my favorite traditions is putting together cute little Valentine’s Day baskets for my kiddos, and trust me, they’re always a hit. Best part? These baskets are fun, thoughtful, and totally budget-friendly. Here’s how I do it for ages 2-5!
Valentine’s Day Baskets for Your Littlest Loves
Start with the Basket
First things first: the basket. I usually snag heart-shaped ones from the Target Dollar Spot or even the Dollar Store. They’re the perfect size for a few sweet surprises without going overboard. Plus, they’re reusable for little toys or craft supplies later!
What Goes Inside?
I like to keep the contents simple but fun—things that make the kids smile without breaking the bank.
1. A Valentine’s Day Book
Books are a must in our house! Each basket includes a Valentine’s Day-themed book, like Llama Llama I Love You or Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse! It’s such a sweet way to bring in the holiday. A great way to do books is to thrift them! I plan on grabbing one of the $2-3 Valentine’s Day books at my local thrift shop for each of the kids vs buying new. I find that works really well for seasonal books they only get out once a year (and then they grow out of them).
2. A Sweet Treat
Every basket needs a little something yummy! Think heart-shaped lollipops, chocolate kisses, or even a small bag of conversation hearts.
3. A Card from Mom & Dad
I write a little note to each kid, telling them why they’re so special and how much they’re loved. It’s a keepsake they can look back on when they’re older (or at least until they accidentally color all over it).
4. A Small Toy or Stuffed Animal
This could be a mini stuffed bear, a car, or even a little set of stickers. Kids this age love surprises!
5. A Play Dough Sensory Kit
I love including a small play dough sensory kit! You can grab these pre-made or DIY them with cookie cutters, glitter, and fun shapes. I tend to grab these from a local shop, Dough by the Bay – supports local & makes a great gift. I added these little mini dough kits to their stockings, too – and they were party favors for my son’s 5th birthday!
Pulling It All Together
Arrange everything in the basket and add some tissue paper or crinkle cut filler for that festive touch. The whole thing takes about 10 minutes to put together and costs under $15 per basket.
Make It Your Own
These baskets are totally customizable—swap out the play dough for crayons, or the treat for a healthier option like fruit snacks. The key is to make it fun and full of love. Seriously – I know we see all over the internet how big some moms go – but as someone who is trying to spend less and do less this year: we don’t HAVE to spend $100 per kid on these baskets. My goal every year is $15.
