Happy #FASHIONWEDNESDAY! I am so excited about today’s post because I’ve been collecting hats for this post for a while now. I am pretty obsessed with wide brimmed hats lately – but especially winter time. They are so easy to style and wear, super comfortable and they really elevate an outfit to the instagram #ootd it deserves. Let’s dive into this post.

An alternative to your typical beanie.

Don’t get me wrong: I LOVE beanies. See this post to see how I style mine in the winter. BUT – sometimes you wanna do something new and change up your outfits. Who wants to wear the same thing 10 times in a row? I’m the queen of outfit repeating and sometimes even I need a break.

Wide brimmed hats are fun, they are different, and they are a conversation piece. PLUS, I’ve found I have a LOT less hat hair with a hat like this than when I wear a tight-fitting beanie. That means I can easy take them off inside so I don’t get too hot. I personally own 3 wide brimmed hats in tan, brown and black and alternate them during the wintertime with my classic beanies!

Outfit elevation to the MAX.

The outfit I’m wearing in this post is cute – it’s cozy, very me and VERY winter classic. It’s a chunky sweater, jeans, and booties. And when I add this hat to it? All of a sudden I’m WAY more chic than I was before. It took this outfit from a normal winter wardrobe staple to something you’d see on the streets of NYC.

For some reason, people think you need to be some fashion icon to be able to pull of hats like this and it just isn’t true! PLUS – you can get away with like 12 day hair if you are wearing a hat. I love throwing hats like this one when I’m on my last day before wash day because it extends the life of my hair one more day which is key to keeping my hair healthy and moisturized.

They can be worn with almost any style outfit: classic, urban, bohemian, etc.

You can wear all kinds of different wide-brimmed hats from floppy to straight, brown to black to tan, the options are endless. Some have tassels, some have bands, some have patterns. You could have a different one for every outfit. The DREAM. To sum this up: there will be one to fit whatever you are wearing at the moment, I promise.

I lay somewhere between a bohemian and urban style, which is great because that expands a huge range of hats to me. I like when they are extra wide and super straight for the winter time vs my staple floppy felt hat for spring and fall.

Where to buy them:

You can feasibly buy hats like this anywhere but my FAVORITE places to shop are Kindred STL and Target. They have SUCH a wide selection, and they are super expensive. The hat I’m wearing in this post is from Kindred and is an in-store only purchase – but you can DM them on instagram at @kindredstl and request this hat and they can send it to you! It’s super easy.

I don’t like to spend more than $25-30 on a hat because I know they aren’t going to be worn out. I am ok with saving money on this accessory as long as it’s still stylish and chic. You probably won’t catch me spending $50-100 on a hat that gets worn a handful of times during the season. It’s definitely a “trendy” item vs a closet staple – so feel free to skip the splurge here!
