HI FRIENDS! I am so excited to be sharing this pregnancy’s studio maternity photo inspiration guide! We took these at the beginning of last month right around when I was 30 weeks pregnant. That’s the exact same time I took my photos with Jack and I personally think it’s the perfect time because you have the perfect baby bump size to show off without feeling like a total cow (which is about where I am a month later HA). When I did my maternity photos with Jack, we opted for an outdoor lifestyle type session so I wanted to do something super different with this session. I went with a studio session and more editorial style vibe and absolutely loved how they turned out. SO. Here they are – with some styling tips for you to make a shoot like this work!

WHAT TO ASK FOR:

When working with a studio photographer, the first thing you want to do is make sure that you already align with how they shoot and their editing style. What we don’t want to do is pick any photographer and ask them to change everything they do. Photography is art, so you want to like what you see first. Choose a photographer that has studio work already in their portfolio vs a photographer who doesn’t have any studio work at all!

When you reach out, have a Pinterest board handy with inspiration you love. A simple Pinterest search for “studio maternity shoot” with yield lots of incredible results. And, of course, you can always just show them this blog post!

The goal is to ask for a studio maternity session with a cream/tan neutral backdrop and studio lighting, with a good amount of black and white photo options. We also utilized the beautiful white brick and natural light for our denim images, but that was more just because the location offered that on it’s own and we wanted to capture it.

WHAT TO WEAR:

I knew right off the bat I wanted to wear a black body suit for my solo maternity photos. Since I only took one or two solo shots with Jack, I wanted to make sure I had a couple of just me and my sweet baby belly. I also didn’t do any bare belly shots with Jack so I made sure that I captured some of those as well.

For our studio family shots, I wanted moody so we did grey/maroon/black for our outfit colors. They went beautifully with the tan backdrop Trent had. For our denim family shots, it was much more laid back with a loose white top + denim for me, a grey shirt and denim for Adam, and just a cute pair of jeans for Jack.

FEELING COMFORTABLE:

I struggle a lot this pregnancy with feeling confident in my body this time around. It isn’t something I really struggled with when I was pregnant with Jack. I knew I needed to really feel my best in the clothing choices I picked so that I would really love the photos. Because we were taking some photos with our 2.5 year old, I also knew that I needed to be flexible with how the shoot went. It’s nearly impossible to feel like you get any good shots with a toddler, but a good photographer will take enough photos that I PROMISE you’ll have a handful of good ones. I walked away from our shoot POSITIVE Trent didn’t get a single picture of Jack actually looking at the camera – but I was shocked when there were MANY great ones to choose from.
