We are BACK baby – and better than ever. It’s been a hot sec since I’ve talked specifically about my period cup experience – I wrote a full blog post about it HERE. As you may know, I am a HUGE fan of the Saalt Cup and their entire brand as a whole (stay tuned for an upcoming episode of my podcast, Hustle Like A Mother Podcast where I interview Cherie, the founder). I’ve been using their period cup now for well over a year (starting with my first postpartum period). NOW – it’s time to try a new period product for you guys. Enter: my Saalt Wear period underwear review! Let’s dive into this.
PERIOD UNDERWEAR REVIEW
Fears prior to trying the underwear:
I have always been skeptical of period underwear (but then again – I was skeptical of period cups, too, and now I’m their biggest fan). My main worries prior to trying the underwear was:
- Leaking through the underwear
- Feeling wet during the day (like I do with pads)
- Having a smell while wearing them – I am ALWAYS paranoid about that when I wear a pad
- Not having enough coverage
That being said, I jumped into this with both feet because I wanted to give it a seriously shot. Also I love Saalt Co and wanted to see if these were worth the hype.
SO: according to Saalt themselves, these underwear hold about as much as 1-2 tampons and are for lighter flow days. I made the decision to try them a few different ways to see what worked best for me and my body:
Day 1 – Heaviest Flow : CUP + UNDERWEAR
Day 2 – Heavy Flow : CUP + UNDERWEAR
Day 3 – Medium Flow : CUP + UNDERWEAR
Day 4 – Medium Flow : UNDERWEAR ONLY
Day 5 – Lighter Flow : UNDERWEAR ONLY
Day 6 – Light Flow / Spotting : UNDERWEAR ONLY
So for day one, I did just for science only wear the underwear this time around just to see what it can / can’t hold. I found that I got a couple hours into the day and I was getting to heavy for the underwear and had some leaking. That being said – it wasn’t nearly as much as I expected as someone with a heavier flow.
For days two + three, I did wear the cup + the underwear and it was perfect. I loved having the assurance that if I did leak (which occasionally happens with the cup) – I wasn’t going to be ruining yet another pair of underwear.
For days four – six, I only wore the underwear and it was perfect!!! The underwear held all day with NO leaks and zero feeling of wetness – it was eons better than a pad or panty liner. I actually would size up for my next pair, however – I got size smalls but I probably could have more comfortably done a medium (I’m typically a size 4-6).
My fears were immediately squashed – there was no leakage (on the appropriate days), I never felt wet at all, I didn’t notice a single bit of smell, and the underwear had plenty of coverage.
I love that I can wear the pairs during the week so I stop ruining my underwear. It’s a great “safety” option to wear with the cup. PLUS: SO MUCH BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. I am obsessed with the fact that I do not need to buy another pad, panty liner or tampon again in my whole life. I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to no longer need to put these products on my skin. Pads/Tampons/Panty liners are so unregulated and I am just so happy to have products I feel so much better about. They might feel a little bit pricey (between $29-39 a piece) – but when I think about how much I will save in pads/panty liners in the long run, it’s worth the splurge for me.
A FEW ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS:
Q: Would these work for bladder leaks?
A: You are in luck, because I’ve got personal experience with that, too. HA!!! I have a condition called Interstitial Cystitis (aka: painful bladder syndrome). It basically means it feels like I have a UTI most of the time – aka: rushing to the bathroom a ton, not being able to wait to go to the bathroom and DUN DUN DUN: the occasional bladder leak. And honestly: I wish all of my underwear was the Saalt Co underwear. It didn’t feel bulky or ugly, and I had protection just in case I did have any leaks (which I did). There were no leaks and no wetness. I felt so at ease and comfortable going about my day. I could still feel pretty while having a functional piece of clothing on my body without having to worry about anything going wrong.
Q: Would these work for postpartum bleeding?
A: Not right away. They won’t hold enough. So many of us HATE the pads the hospitals send home with us so instead of these, I’d highly recommend THESE. They are the Silhouette Depends for Women. They hold a LOT of blood without leaking and they are comfortable and essentially undetectable underneath clothes. Once your postpartum bleeding slows down and is more of the flow of a light period, then you can switch to the period underwear.
