Think of this blog post today as an episode of Myth Busters. The myth we are busting today? The notion that some women can’t pull off lipstick. Bull. If you are one of those women that thinks for some reason you can’t pull off a rockin’ bold lip, I want you to think again. Just for a second, pretend that you don’t have that mindset. Stick with me until the end of this post, and if I haven’t convinced you to at least try to wear lipstick, by all means, you can leave the boldness to someone else. Lipstick is, in my opinion, the best makeup product of all time. It completes every outfit, every makeup style…because even a “nude lip” requires some kind of lipstick or gloss to bring you to that perfect “no shade” color everyone covets.

5 Shades of Lipstick Every Woman Can Pull Off

There are AT LEAST 5 shades of lip color that should be in every woman’s makeup bag. They are timeless and take your look from a 5 to a 10 in about 3 seconds flat. Personally, I own about 10x that many lipsticks (yes, I have a problem. no, I do not intend on doing anything about it). But if you aren’t as lip crazy as I am, these 5 are the perfect staples.

I triple dog dare you to try any one of these shades of lip color and NOT feel like a winner.

Sparkly Baby Pink:

I know what you are thinking: How in the world does “sparkly bubblegum barbie pink” equate to a lip shade that every woman can pull off?!?!?

But trust me on this one: this particular lipgloss will change your life. Buxom is amazing. The gloss shown above is “Erica” and it is NOT the shade of pink you think it is. It is the perfect color to give you a glassy, hint of color shine. It is just the right touch when paired with a dark smokey eye or a sassy winged liner. I often throw it on over my favorite chapstick when I am running errands or going to class.

Not-Your-Mother’s Lipbalm:

This stuff, man. I have never been more in love with a lipstick/chapstick/hint of color combination in my entire life. I love it so much, I bought it in two shades: natural pink and sheer coral. The pink one, though, should be on everyone’s lips. To quote Dior:

“Awaken and enhance the natural beauty of your lips with this unique balm. Formulated with color reviver technology, this silky lipstick reacts with the chemistry of your lips to create a special shade that will last all day.”

The chemistry student in me thinks this is the coolest thing I’ve ever heard. It reflects the perfect “you” shade.

*bonus: it smells incredible.

Watermelon Lipstick/gloss Combo:

This is also by Dior. That means it is automatically amazing by default. However, if you need more proof, here it is: this doubles as a lipstick and a lipgloss all in one. It has the staying power of lipstick and the gloss of a lip shine. This color is “Wonderland”, a bright and happy watermelon.

I want you to try and not be scared of this if you are someone who doesn’t wear lipstick. Yes, it is bright. No, it does not make you look like a clown. It makes you look happy. And it is the perfect color for spring and summer. I am so glad that corals and pinks are still popular (thank heavens for that)!

Purple Lipstick:

Ahhhh, purple. This is my all time favorite purple color because it is a mix between a bright purple and a wine. So basically the world’s most perfect fall/winter color to ever be created. Also this lipstick is like $5. So buy every shade you can get your hands on.

This is what I call a power color. It accents just about everything and it calls attention to your face. If this lipstick could talk it would say “I am a boss. I am beautiful. You should wear me”.

Classic Red:

Ahhhh. I purposefully saved the best for last. This is my all time favorite shade of red, Clinique’s Matte Crimson. It looks good on everyone. I am serious. And it is matte. Which makes it even better. It packs a punch and, amazingly, doesn’t dry out your lips. If the color alone doesn’t sell you on this, that definitely should.

Red is a color that all women should get accustomed to wearing. It is the classiest of lipstick colors. It can be worn as a fashion statement, to the office, to class..you get the picture. Red is forever.

  1. I am one of those women who can’t pull off lipstick. The few times I tried I felt (and looked like) a clown. However, I know that a lot of women look fantastic with lipstick on.

  2. Ooooh that last one is GORGEOUS! My friend made me wear red lipstick once and I didn’t mind it so much! Usually I just wear a clear balm.

  3. Unless I am doing something wrong, your link the the purple lipstick actually leads to a red color on the ulta website. Can you share the name of that shade?
