Happy #fashionwednesday!! I’ve talked a lot of about dressing while pregnant over the course of this pregnancy (you can find all my pregnancy style posts here) – but one thing I haven’t discussed quite as much is dressing professionally. I’ve talked lots about maxi dresses, comfortable clothes, cute brunch type outfits – but not very much how to dress if you have a situation in which you need to be professional and adult-y. I’ve been searching HIGH and LOW for something to wear that would be appropriate to accept the Beauty Influencer of the Year award in LA this month (I’m heading there this weekend actually). I was really shocked at how HARD it has been to find something that I could wear on stage. UNTIL I FOUND THIS DRESS. Let’s dive into this.

How To Dress Professionally While Pregnant

One. Rock those blazers and cardigans, baby.

These are fabulous because they work before, during and after pregnancy. If you don’t have blazers or cardigans, now is the time to pick some up! They instantly make an outfit look more professional, and odds are, no matter what month you are in pregnancy, you are going to look great in them. Consider 3/4 sleeves if it’s spring or fall, and full sleeves if it’s winter. Unfortunately, they don’t work quite as well during the hot months of summer, but sometimes you can get away with a cotton blazer that has a little bit more breathe to it.

Two. Ditch the heels in favor of some nice, comfortable flats.

I’m sorry to break it to you, but not all of us are Kate or Meghan and wear heels the entirety of our pregnancies. I made it to about week 25 and then had to put them away for good. I wanted SO BADLY to wear them on my LA trip, but honestly, it wasn’t worth not being able to feel my feet and trying to squeeze into shoes that just don’t fit right now. Instead, I opted for some really comfortable nude flats with AMAZING inserts that make walking feel like I’m on a cloud instead of a bed of legos.

Three. Keep your colors simple and staple.

Great staple colors are: navy, red, black, and nude. They look great on nearly everyone, and they are very work-appropriate. I love this dress because it was enough to stand out nicely, but still very classic. You aren’t going to want super bright and neon pieces for a work place or ceremony type situation – so stick with what we know WORKS.

Four. Accessorize to make a simple outfit fancier.

Sometimes, all you need to dress an outfit up are some AWESOME accessories. Take a basic black dress and add a bright and fun statement necklace to it, or a cute belt, and you’ve already elevated this entire outfit. Don’t underestimate the power of great hair accessories (hello pearl barrettes that are back in style now), statement earrings or bedazzled shoes!

Five. Dress in a way that actually fits your body.

I promise, it’s not worth it to try and squeeze into your old clothes when they truly no longer fit. There is a reason they make clothing specifically for pregnant women. I could get away with MOST of my pre-pregnancy dresses (as long as they were stretchy material) until mid-second trimester. After that, the dresses I still fit into were few and far between. I ended up finally investing in some maternity dresses that make me feel good, and don’t squeeze me in all the wrong places. I look better and I feel A MILLION times better.

Six. Invest in correct undergarments.

I put this off as long as humanely possible. I truly did. I did NOT want to get maternity bras. They are expensive, and I thought that even though I’d gone up at least two cup sizes by week 30 – I could still make my old bras work. But they didn’t fit me properly and they looked funny under my clothes. I also didn’t want to get new underwear, but the truth is, my old underwear also cut into my hips (which now have a bit more to love) and looked bulky and unflattering under dresses. Do yourself a favor and if NOTHING ELSE: get properly fitting undergarments and then thank me later.
