Happy #FASHIONWEDNESDAY! This is my absolute favorite time of year for fashion – and I’m soaking in every bit of it. It’s cooled down quite a bit here in Missouri and has been steadily hovering in the high 40s and low 50s so cozy sweaters, vests and jackets are now officially IN. And with the changing of the weather, comes some of my favorite fabric choices: dark denim, fleece, faux fur and corduroy. Today, we are talking about styling CORDUROY! It’s fall’s unsung hero when it comes to seasonally-appropriate fabric. It’s so unique in texture and can absolutely amp up any outfit. Let’s dive into this.

FALL TREND ALERT: Corduroy Mini Skirt
Why corduroy?
Corduroy is an awesome textured fabric. It has lines that run up and down the fabric with a soft, tufted feeling. It’s often called the “poor man’s velvet” because it has a similar texture, but it can easily be made with cotton fibers. Corduroy fabrics with thicker wales (the lines that run up the fabric) are reserved for pieces worn below the waist, think: pants, skirts, shoes, even bags. Corduroy fabrics with thinner wales are reserved for pieces worn above the waist, think: tops, jackets, and dresses.
Best pieces?
My favorite way to wear corduroy are with mini skirts and jackets. I love them in colors like black, burnt orange, mustard and olive green. They are perfect for the fall season, and go with everything. I have also seen some absolutely adorable corduroy booties – but have yet to find the perfect ones for me. I will let you guys know if I find some I LOVE.
This particular mini is from Loft, and it’s the exact same cut and style as the denim mini skirt I got from them earlier this summer. It’s just long enough that I feel totally confident and comfortable in it, but not too long that it hits on a funny spot in my leg. You can sit, walk, stand and move around without fear of flashing the general public. #winning
The Right & WRONG way to style this trend:
I’d say most things in fashion are pretty hard to mess up. A classic olive green top, denim, a military jacket. But corduroy can be a little bit more daring – and people often shy away from it. So here are some tried and true tips to keep you in line & looking sharp:
RIGHT:
A good cut – tailored pants or overalls, a fitted jacket, shapely skirt
Anything cropped at the waist
A worn in appearance
WRONG:
Anything without shape to it – baggy pants, SUPER oversized jackets or tops, baggy dresses
Droopy blazers (too big on the shoulders)
TOO vintage – aka, anything that looks dusty or moth-eaten
Easy outfit suggestions:
Some of my favorite ways to wear corduroy are:
- Mini skirt, turtleneck, faux fur vest (AS SHOWN)
- Bell bottom denim, turtle neck, corduroy jacket
- Cream & navy striped top, corduroy overalls
- White tee, corduroy boyfriend top, ripped denim
