In honor of Adopt a Shelter Dog month, I’ve teamed up with my friends at Solid Gold to outline ways to help support your local shelter and provide tips on keeping your rescue pup happy and healthy! Catch my past posts with Solid Gold here!

Fun Fact: Archer is a rescue pup!!! He was found by a rescue shelter in Arkansas, if you can believe it. Someone threw him out of the back of a truck onto the side of the road and left him there as a 6 week old pup. An old friend of mine works at the shelter and runs the foster dog program and she called me and asked if we were still looking for a dog (I had told her to keep an eye out for a shepherd mix if she came across one). We were, and we asked to see some pictures. His shelter name was Gravy – so she sent over the pictures, I sent them to Adam and we drove to Arkansas the next day to pick him up. We changed his name to Archer and the rest, as they say, is history. Two years later, he’s our best pup and we are still totally obsessed with him (and keeping him healthy with Solid Gold!).

Celebrating Adopt A Shelter Dog Month with Solid Gold Pet!

This blog is sponsored by Solid Gold Pet. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Here are 5 ways you can help your local animal shelter this month:

1. ADOPT DON’T SHOP!!! Shelters are ALWAYS full of dogs that needs homes: especially older dogs. If you have room in your heart (and your home) for a dog in need – stop by the shelter first.

2. DONATE! I love bringing our old towels into our local shelter. It seems crazy that such a small thing helps but seriously – they ALWAYS need towels. For cleaning, lining cages, washing the dogs, etc. It’s a great easy thing to donate! My friends at Solid Gold love to donate food to improve the gut health in the fur babies until they’re adopted!

3. VOLUNTEER! When I was in college, I actually went one day a week to the animal shelter in our town to walk the dogs! I’d usually take one or two out at a time and take them on long walks through the nearby park. They got exercise, socialization and lots and lots of treats and pets!

4. SHARE! Share them on social media. It’s a HUGE help. The more eyes they get on their pages, the more people have an opportunity to adopt the pets in the shelter or donate time, money or supplies.

5. BECOME A FOSTER! This is something I hope to do one day when I have the space and resources for it. I’d LOVE to foster older dogs! It’s a huge help to the shelter

because it frees up space for new dogs, and it allows current dogs to become house trained / socialized / trained.

Solid Gold is our favorite pet food – and did you know they’ve proudly donated over 350,000 meals to pets in need this year They provide high-quality food that will provide all of the nutrition shelter pets need to stay healthy while they look for their forever home.

If you are interested in grabbing some Solid Gold kibble or food supplements for your shelter pup – I recommend trying the Bone Broth and the Bone Broth Stew (lookout for a promo code below)!!! They add a really rich, yummy flavor to standard kibble AND it adds awesome nutritional benefits for a healthy gut. The Bone Broth itself contains human grade beef bone broth, naturally occurring collagen – and bonus: it also contains essential vitamins and minerals. A lot of shelter dogs come from neglect and abuse, so knowing that you have totally turned their life around and are providing everything they need to support and healthy body is incredibly comforting to know.
