HAPPY FRI-YAY, everyone! I’m so excited about today’s post because it makes this official: I’m growing out my bangs. I. AM. GROWING. OUT. MY. BANGS. I am putting this in writing so that I don’t get so discouraged with the grow out process that I give up and cut them again. I cut my bangs about a year ago and two months ago – and I have LOVED them. I absolutely love my bangs. I think they are so cute, and I’m not actually annoyed with them nor did I ever regret getting them. The reason I am growing them out, however, is due to the tiny human growing inside of my body. Let’s dive into the details below!
5 EASY Ways To Style Bangs When You Are Growing Them Out
The thing with bangs is you’ve gotta style them. Every day. They don’t pull back into a pony tail, and after about two days – you need to wash them or wet them down and re-dry them. After Jack gets here, I know that I’m going to be rocking the mom bun pretty often in the first few weeks (months?) of his life. I also know that eventually my little sweetheart is going to get a bit grabby and want to tug at my hair and again – I am going to want to at least be able to pull it up. With short bangs, that’s PRETTY much impossible.
Now that they are a little bit longer, I’ve been able to style them in really cute ways so they can grow out and be out of my face. It took a good 3-4 weeks of them being VERY in my eyeballs but now we are at a length where they are right below my eyes so they are easier to style. It’s an annoying month-ish but try to at least get to that point so you can start styling them while they grow.
Here are my favorite ways to style bangs while they’re growing out – and I hope they are easy for you, too!
ONE: The curtain bang.
First things first – you need to cut your bangs in a way that will HELP them grow out. I chose the curtain bang style because I like my middle part and plan on keeping it for a while! Curtain bangs are a really easy cut for your stylist to help promote on your head. They just make a small cut right in the middle of your straight bangs to angle each side towards the opposite direction. This way, when they grow out, they naturally part down the center and grow out towards the side instead of right down into your eyes.
This is an easy, easy style because you just straighten your bangs towards the sides of your face and let them fall naturally! This is always my “day one” style because it looks best with fresh, clean hair.
TWO: The dutch braid.
This is my all-time favorite because I LOVE dutch braids. You guys have seen me rock this a LOT because it’s easy to do and it looks so much fancier than it actually is. AKA the ideal hairstyle.
Basically, you part your hair to your preferred side, and begin braiding where your bangs begin. The deep side part should push all of your bangs to one side so it makes it easier to braid. I braid as tight as I can to make the smallest braid possible, so that I can pull the pieces loose and it creates really full texture.
*pro tip: this look works best on second or third day wavy hair! The dirty/textured hair holds the braid so much better and the waves add volume.
*pro tip #2: add a really fun pearl barrette to the side of the dutch braid for a fancier look!
THREE: The side twists.
This is BEYOND easy. Again – I love doing this on second or third day wavy hair but looks good on straight hair as well.
Start with your hair how you like it – wavy or straight and parted down the middle. Take one side of your bangs and begin the twist. Take two pieces and twist together, adding hair to the twist as you go back towards your crown. I only add to the bottom piece of the twist so that it creates a very distinct wrap-type look. Then do it again on the opposite side!
*pro tip: try this with a fun headband! They are back in style and SO CUTE with your bangs pulled back like this.
FOUR: The messy bun.
This is a no-brainer. This is my last day hair before I wash (I wash twice a week, with about 3-4 days between washes). My hair is typically greasy/textured/wavy at this time. I add some hairspray and dry shampoo and then pull my hair up into a simple messy bun.
My bangs at this point are pretty stuck to the rest of my hair, but if I have some stubborn pieces that want to fall down – I will use some hairspray and a single bobby pin to secure the small pieces.
*pro tip: do what I did in the picture below – and add a fun dutch braid to your bun to make it a little bit fancier!
FIVE: The small poof.
I love this look. Poofs have come a long way from when I rocked them between 2007-2010. They use to be teased to the high heavens and just … not cute … nowadays, “poofs” are way smaller and more subdued. I only do them when my hair is curled because I have more volume to balance it out.
This works better on day two hair because my hair isn’t greasy yet, but it is textured and my waves are lived in one day. I pull the front section of my bangs up and secure with two bobby pins. Easy. As. Pie.
*Pro tip: this poof was paired with a little half top knot and it’s SO easy and SUPER cute!
PIN THIS FOR LATER:
I hope that these styles help you manage those pesky bangs as they grow out. I know how frustrating it can be – and I totally get wanting to cut off your hair like a month or two into the grow out process. Luckily, I really think these styles are super cute and almost cuter than just regular bangs so it actually CAN be fun to grow your bangs out and not totally stab-yourself-in-the-eye inducing.

The braid is by far my fave – so cute!
You find so many cute, unique ways to style your hair – and your bangs! I wish I had that skill. My hair is either down and straight or down and curled – and I have to wash every other day because it does NOT hold a curl through the grease (I’ve tried a million dry shampoos) and it gets really flat and limp and disgusting-looking haha. But you’re giving me inspiration for things to attempt!
This brought back so many memories! I used to have bangs around 7 years ago during my Zooey Deschanel fangirl days, but those bangs looked awful on me! I’m pretty sure these were all the things I did back then when I was growing them back out!
Oh so many great ideas here! I have grown out my bangs so many times as I can not get what I want as my hair line is too low so my bangs are never really long and swingy unless they are in my eyes lol. Having a low hair line is challening.
