If you follow me on instagram (which, if you aren’t, you should fix that immediately — link in the side bar), then you already know that I am a makeup brush fanatic. I can’t help myself from buying all of the makeup brushes I can get my hands on. It’s a problem. I’ve acknowledged it. I don’t plan on changing my habits. Now that we have that out-of-the-way, today I am going to be talking about each of these makeup brushes and what you can use them for. I’ve had this requested a couple of times and I am finally getting into it. Let’s dive into this.
I have put together a little infographic for you with each brush and their names below. Then, I break it down brush by brush and explain if for you! I’m hoping that this makes buying and choosing the right brushes a lot easier for some of you! Be sure to let me know if it does. 🙂 Read on, my fellow makeup junkies!
Highlighter Brush: This brush is used for…wait for it…powdered highlighter. I love the way this tapers to a point. It allows me to cover the tops of my cheeks with the larger side and then also cover the bridge of my nose and cupids bow with the point.
Nose Contour & Cheek Contour Brush: These brushes are different sizes but the same shape. Nose contour is super skinny so it is perfect for getting that hard to reach spot. The cheek contour is perfect because it is wide enough to cover right underneath my cheek bone and it also does a great job covering your temples.
Blush Brush: This is really super self-explanatory. Fluffy enough to get that summer glow without concentrating too much product in one spot.
Small, Medium & Large Blenders: These are a must have in every single makeup bag. Seriously. Blending makeup is something that is often overlooked. The small blender is used to blend out concentrated color in your crease. The medium and large blender are used to blend out transition colors. It all depends on how heavy you want your pigment.
All-Over Shader & Large Shader: These shaders are really great for putting the first shade of color on your eyelid. I usually use the rose-gold one but sometimes I’ll switch up and use the Urban Decay one. They both work the same.
Flat Shader: This is a unique brush. I like to use it to pack on solid colors when doing a cut crease. It has a very defined edge and makes the perfect line.
Small Shader: This brush is perfect for applying color underneath your eye and in the crease. I usually do my second color with this brush.
Crease Detail: I love this crease brush because of the tiny end. It deposits the smallest amount of shadow color into your crease and blends it out like a dream.
Eyebrow Brush: This is the best brush for eyebrows (used with Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade). It is a stiff brush and it is small enough to make tiny hair-like strokes.
Angled Liner & Bent Liner: These brushes are perfect for getting that perfect cat eye. Either one of these works for getting that one trend look with gel or mousse eye liner. They are tiny and easy to manipulate.
There you have it! My complete guide to makeup brushes! I love all of these brushes and use most of them daily. Do you have a favorite brush? Let me know in the comments! As my husband well knows, I can’t stop myself from buying a new brush! I really hoped you enjoyed this post and learned something cool today.

This is super helpful Taylor! I’d be lost without all my makeup brushes. I look back before I started using them and wonder how I ever got along without them-haha 🙂
ME TOO. I used to just get the cheapest ones or use the little sponge ones that come with drugstore makeup…boy did my makeup game change when I got good brushes!
Lately I’ve really been enjoying the Real Technique make up brushes.

I had no idea there were different kinds of contour brushes! I just mold mine to fit my need at the time (which is probably horrible for the brush). I am SO happy to know a nose contour brush exists! That is the hardest place to contour for me. The crease detail brush sounds awesome too! I need to go shopping!
Thanks Lauren! There totally are! The nose contour is a life saver (I used to squish mine down too). It is so skinny and perfect for the job!!!
Haha. This is such a clear post! I’m rubbish at makeup so always looking for extra tips. Definitely pinned this to pinterest!

Thanks Mackenzie!! I totally feel you — I used to be the SAME way!! Then I realized that GOOD makeup brushes don’t have to be so expensive and they will change your life.
I have never worn much makeup because I don’t feel confident in my ability to apply it. I never ever would have guessed there are so many types of brushes!
There are even more than what is pictured here, too!
Cool! I wondered how people got such an awesome cat-eye! I fail everytime, but it probably has to do with the tools I’m using.
I definitely always use my eyeliner brush to do my cat eye wings!!! 🙂
Wonderful post!! I need to check out your highlighter and contour recommendations for sure!
WOW!!! I love how you described the use of each brush (and their pictures). They can be very confusing especially if you have 15 LOL! This post will surely help me in buying and choosing my makeup brushes. Have a great day Taylor!xx
