Happy FRI-YAY, friends! Tomorrow I hop on a plane early early to head to my favorite city in the world: New York! I will be instagramming and vlogging my entire NYFW trip so be sure to hang out with me on Instagram to catch everything as it’s happening this year. I’m going with my blogging bestie Erica (from Coming Up Roses) just like I did last year, so you know it’s gonna be amazing. We have awesome shows planned, parties RSVP’d to, brand lunches to attend and more. There are SO many things going on in New York during Fashion Week that it can get a little bit overwhelming (I won’t lie and say there were times I even considered NOT going this year because of how stressful and crazy it can get – not to mention expensive), so I’ve put together the best tips I can to rocking and slaying the streets of NYC during Fashion Week. Let’s dive into this.

Know where you’re staying.

This is important because it’s notoriously difficult to find hotels and places to stay during NYFW. Pick the dates you are going in advance and try your best to find a reasonably prices place to stay. If you are staying in the city, try for something centrally located so you aren’t spending a fortune on Ubers. If you have a friend in the area you can crash with, do it! I stay with my aunt in Greenwich, CT (about a 30 min train ride to the city) and it saves a ton on money.

Plan everything in advance (but know it’s ok to be flexible).

This is important. Erica and I have each day totally planned from morning to night, but we also know that we may get last minute invites and party options to go to, and we are ok with changing up plans or canceling existing plans if something better comes up. It’s all about having a good outline of what you are doing (again – to plan for Ubers) but being ok with some change.

PLAN FOOD STOPS (+ bring granola bars).

This is important and something we did NOT do last year. It would get to the evening and we’d realize that we didn’t plan for food and we were STARVING. It’s really important to make sure you scope out restaurants in the part of town you’re in and STOP what you are doing to eat something. Even if it’s small. You will need it. Another tip: bring 3-4 granola bars with you in your bag. Sometimes shows run late (or early) and you need to grab a quick bite of something in the back of the cab. It’s an easy way to make sure you don’t get hungry and stop enjoying the time you are spending in NYC.

Make a point to do close events together to save on Uber costs.

Uber rides can run upwards of $300 for one person in the city during fashion week and sometimes more. Try to plan your events + PR meetings as close together as possible so that you are able to walk to some if you can. It makes it easier on you, less likely you will run into traffic and be late and keeps your NYFW bill down.

Pitch as many shows as you can and RSVP to all of them.

If there are certain shows you really want to get into, pitch them! Even smaller bloggers have a good chance of ending up on an invite list if they send a personalized pitch. Offer them instastory coverage, or a feed post or a mention in your blog. It’s a great way to make connections and get in to see the shows. For the shows you are pitched, RSVP to everything. You may be able to swing more than you think and you don’t want to miss out because you thought your timing would be off.

Be sure to stop by your favorite PR companies to put a face to the name and build relationships.

This is my FAVORITE part of NYFW. I love meeting with brands that I work with during the year! It is SO much fun. Shoot an email to your PR friends and ask if they want to grab coffee or lunch and stop by to say hello. It’s one of the best way to strengthen your relationship with brands and score collaborations for the future.

Bring comfortable shoes to walk in, and heels in your bag.

Please, please, please don’t try to walk around in heels during fashion week. Bring a REALLY cute pair of neutral and comfortable flats and wear them when you aren’t about to walk into a show or PR meeting. I’m not kidding: the last thing you want to be doing when you are RACING into a show that’s about to close it’s doors in be in six inch heels. You just don’t. The blisters are NOT worth it.

Have a full water bottle on you at all times.

You will be running around all day long so it’s really important to stay hydrated. You want to make sure that you are drinking a lot of water and keeping your electrolytes up. Use a water that has vitamins in it for energy levels, too, like Smart Water (they’re my personal favorite. Plus they have the flip top so I can open it with one hand). Stick a large one in your bag and refill it when you can.

Bring a portable phone charger.

There is NOTHING worse than getting to your last show of the day and your phone dying before you can get pictures and videos of it. Nothing. Keep one (or two) portable chargers in your bag to make sure you stay at full charge all day long. You have pictures + fashion shows to capture!! Plus, how will your friends or brands get ahold of you if you don’t have a charged phone?!

Schedule a shoot with a photographer.

I’ve been lucky to have Erin in New York with me both years I’ve gone, but if you don’t have your own personal Erin, find a fashion photographer in the city (there are TONS of them) and schedule a shoot in advance. You will want some professional images of you in the city, I promise. They make great content and are awesome for portfolio pieces when you pitch brands next year, too.

Bring 2-3 outfit changes per day.

This sounds over the top and obnoxious, I know. But it’s worth it. The goal is to get as much content as you possibly can and the only way to do that is to have multiple outfits to get shots of during the day. I think I had 3 per day last year, but I’ll probably do more like 2 this year, and 3-4 on the day of my shoot with Erin.
