Happy #fashionwednesday!! It’s another HUMP DAY, and I have made my August goals, organized the crap out of all my new makeup (my live replay that goes over all the PR I got last week, price point, and how to use it is up here), and started planning for NYFW. It’s been a busy, busy week here at B&A HQ. Today’s style post is ALL about ruffled collars, why you need to own some tops that rock it, and where you can own this look. Let’s dive into it.

How To Style Ruffled Collars (But Not Like Your Grandma)

So. What immediately comes to mind when I say, “ruffled collar”? I personally thought of Ron Weasley at the Yule Ball in his dress robes….and also my great grandmother in her Sunday best. AKA: not exactly the prettiest picture. I bought this top a little while ago and basically haven’t been able to put it down because I love it so much and I was honestly surprised that I like it as much as I do.
There are tried-and-true rules to styling a cute ruffled collar without channeling an 84 year old woman (unless that’s like your thing). Here they are:

TIP #1: PATTERNS MATTER.
Ok. So ruffled crocheted or lace collars aren’t usually something I jam with because I instantly think early 1900s. I go away from that type of pattern and tend to gravitate towards floral or solid colors. They are a little bit more modern, which is exactly what you want with this style.

TIP #2: NECKLINES ARE IMPORTANT.
You can go for an off the shoulder look with ruffles (see tops below), or like the one I’m wearing: more of a v-neck with a tie and ruffles going down the center. I would stay away from anything with a turtleneck type neckline with ruffles. It’s typically outdated and doesn’t really do much for any body shape. Instead take a look at what your body shape IS and tailor it to that. Go for a ruffled scoop neck if you are straight up and down, a v neck for a more hourglass body shape, off the shoulders for apple/pear type bodies. At the end of the day though, just make sure you can see your neck regardless of the neckline so you don’t get swallowed whole in the ruffles.

TIP #3: THERE IS SUCH A THING AS TOO MANY RUFFLES.
You don’t want to drown in your ruffles. One-two layers of ruffles is usually plenty when it comes to tops. Anymore than that and you lose body shape and figure, or look larger than you are. For skirts, however, 3-4 layers of ruffles can be acceptable. I always go for one-two no matter what, so that I don’t get lost in the fabric.
Ruffles can be SO CUTE, especially when done right. I’m obsessed with the off-the-shoulder ruffle trend I’ve been seeing everywhere, and the ruffles-down-the-center situation that I’m wearing in this post. I think they are feminine, classy and add just the right touch to every outfit to dress it up a bit. A boring shirt instantly becomes exciting when you add a few ruffles to the center.

I hope this post helped you decide how to style that ruffled top you’ve got sitting in the back of your closet (or convinced you to pick up one of the cute ones in this post).

Love this whole outfit!! I’m a fan of ruffles when they are done right. I completely agree that too many ruffles is a bit much.
I love this top – I have a similar one and try to style it with contemporary accessories to avoid the “Grandma” look. It really is a beautiful top!

I agree you most definitely do not look like a grandma. I’ve flirted with ruffles in the past but I’ve never looked as good as you do here. But I’m learning, you’ll have me dressing well soon.
Beautiful outfit and photos! You definitely don’t look like a grandma!
I agree, the turtleneck ruffles are really difficult to pull off. Great outfit!
