When I get up in the morning, I want two things: for nobody to talk to me and my favorite morning drink, Pero, to be in my hand. I am so not a morning person. All I need are snuggles from my kitty (and sometimes my husband) and to be left alone.
SO what is this mysterious drink I am speaking of? Let me start by saying, I know that I have a lot of coffee addicts that read my blog. And trust me…I used to be one of you. Coffee is delicious. But for those of us who don’t drink coffee, or are simply looking for another tasty & amazing drink to spice up their mornings, I have something pretty fantastic for you. Read on for my favorite recipe for Pero Frappuccinos!
Pero Frappes: My Favorite Morning (also afternoon and evening) Drink
Soooo. What even is Pero?! It is a mix of malted barley, barley, chicory and rye. That is it. It is the best coffee substitute I’ve ever found. I used to drink coffee all the time. But the last few years, I stopped drinking coffee all together so I needed something to replace it, obviously. I searched far and wide and then my best friend introduced me to this glorious drink. It looks like coffee….it tastes like coffee…by science standards, it should be coffee. But it’s not. *mind blown*
INGREDIENTS:
Pero Drink Mix
Sugar
Heavy Cream
Vanilla
Water
INSTRUCTIONS:
Pour 5 tbs heavy whipping cream into a shakeable cup or small blender.
Add 3.5 tsp Pero mix.
Add 3.5 tsp sugar.
Add 2 tsp vanilla.
Add 1/4 cup of water.
Shake/Blend.
I use a little mason jar that had a sealable lid! I put all the ingredients in and then I shake until blended.

Ok. There you have it, ladies! My FAVORITE morning wake-me-up drink. I love Pero, and I love that it is a coffee substitute that doesn’t disappoint. It is easy to make and takes about two seconds. It is pretty, makes a yummy foam at the top and doesn’t have a bitter after-taste. It is also kitty-approved. Felix constantly wants to “share”.
What are your favorite drinks? Any amazing recipes I need to try? I would love to hear about them! If you decide to make this frappuccino, take a picture and tag me on instagram! I want to see your beautiful drinks!
As always, thanks for stopping by to Blonde & Ambitious. Be sure to follow me on social media and stay tuned because I have SO MANY giveaways coming up this month. I’m serious. Get ready.
Interesting! Does it still have caffeine in it, or is the point of it to taste like coffee and not have any caffeine? Definitely makes me very curious!
It does NOT have caffeine. 🙂 The point is to taste like coffee without the side effects (anxious, shaky, sleeplessness, etc) that accompany it.
I will definitely have to try this Taylor! I love protein shakes, orange juice, passion fruit tea from Starbucks, green tea from Starbucks or a few different coffee drinks as long as it’s not black. Lol I’ll try anything though! Cool post babe! Xo
How interesting is this??! I’ve not heard of Pero! I just became a bit of an iced coffee fanatic recently, but should probably look into some substitutions some days. I’ll check this one out! Thanks for sharing it!

It’s great for those of us who don’t do well with caffeine, as it is 100% caffeine free!
So interesting! I had never heard of pero until your post. I am an avid coffee drinker, but am always willing to try new things! Hopefully I can find some soon to try 🙂
It is a great alternative! let me know what you think!
Yum! I want to try this!

My husband loves Pero, but I don’t think he has ever added the other ingredients… sounds like it would be delicious though!
I can’t drink it hot but I do really love it mixed with these yummy ingredients.
Wow! That’s crazy! I’ve never heard of that. I’m definitely going to look into it. Any idea what the health benefits are? Does it wake you up? Lol cause I’m a prett major coffee addict. I’m not very nice without it 🙁 lol
For me, it is perfect because it doesn’t have the high amount of acidity or caffeine that coffee has. I find that I look forward to it just as much as I did to my morning coffee 🙂
I have never heard of pero but I am definitely going to have to give it a shot! This looks delicious and your kitty baby is adorable as welL! Loved this post!
Thanks, Madeleine! He is pretty cute 😉
This looks interesting…but coffee, lol

If you don’t mind me asking, why don’t you want to drink coffee anymore?
This is really interesting. Where do you buy the mix?
Sure Kristin! 🙂 I have stopped drinking caffeine altogether as it really messes with my body chemistry. I don’t like the way it makes me feel! You can buy the mix at any Walmart store!
This sounds delicious, could of used two this morning! I will have to give this a try for my Monday morning.
Let me know how you like it!
Wow, I have never heard of this! What a great substitute. I don’t like drinking coffee due to adrenals being overworked but this could be really great for my coffee-drinking friends!
The great part is that it isn’t coffee at all! 🙂
never heard of it! I drink too much coffees this could be great on the afternoons!
Definitely!!!
I have never heard of Pero before! This sounds so good!

This looks incredibly delicious and it would be a great option for when I want something different. I will have to hunt out this mix!
Wow so it tastes like coffee but it’s not coffee. The chicory is polyphenol-rich too, I have to try it. I am a coffee addict. If I drink more than 2 cups a day, I feel jittery. I could try this as my third cup substitute 🙂
Super good!! I think it’s supposed to be 1 1/4 cup water . . . it’s much better that way 😉
I love Pero! I drink it hot in the mornings with a little sugar and French vanilla creamer. Sooooo goood! I even like it at night before bed sometimes and since it’s caffene free it doesn’t keep me up. 😀
I’m surprised so many people don’t know about Pero and Inka since they are nearly the same product as Postum which I grew up on. Postum was out of production for some years but is apparently being made again by another company. I buy Inka and Pero at health food stores and European ethnic grocery stores. The product was invented when there was a European coffee shortage years ago.
WOULD POSTUM OR PERO WORK IN BAKED GOODS THAT CALL FOR BREWED COFFEE (SUCH AS CHOCOLATE CAKE)?
