7 Texturizing Hairsprays That Will Change Your Hair Game

Happy FRI-YAY! Today, I’m talking about one of the most important hair products in my routine: texturizing hairspray. I have been testing a million of these out and am breaking down these seven on the market. This is basically the texturizing hairspray olympics – I put these sprays through a series of tests that prove whether or not they are actually worth your hard earned money. Texturizing hairspray is used for that perfect, piece-y, Victoria’s Secret-esque look. It typically has a medium hold and tends to mattify a hairstyle. Another pro: if you are looking to do a braided hairstyle, texturizing hairspray is a great aid in making sure your braid doesn’t slip out of place.

7 Texturizing Hairsprays That Will Change Your Hair Game

I’m rating these hair sprays based on this criteria: texture (obviously), volume, smell, nozzle, and price. They have a possibility of getting a total of 5 stars.

SIX BEST:

ONE: Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

Texture: This gives my hair a very light and airy texture. It’s almost like spun sugar in the best way possible. It also mattifies my hair, which is a really nice feature.

Volume: This is an AMAZING volumizing hairspray. It gives me good volume at the root and it actually stays throughout the day.

Smell: This has a very minimal smell – I don’t really ever notice it (which is a good thing for me because I’m really sensitive to smells.

Nozzle: I wish this nozzle was easier to direct. It it big and flat and I find that I can’t easily turn it if I need to so I don’t love it.

Price: $46.00 for 8.5 fl oz. I think this is a pretty pricey for a hair spray even though you do get a lot of product. It isn’t the worst – but definitely not an inexpensive addition to your routine. This gets half a star.

RATE: 3.5/5 STARS

TWO: Ouay Texturizing Hair Spray

Texture: This is a little bit more substantial of a texture than the Oribe and makes my hair feel a little more dry (in a good way). This spray is perfect for braids and messy buns because it has great grip.

Volume: This also adds a TON of volume when used in combination with the Ouay dry shampoo foam which I also love. It’s good on it’s own, but doesn’t necessarily give root volume, more body volume.

Smell: It smells really yummy, but the smell doesn’t last which is good for me.

Nozzle: The nozzle is almost like a mousse nozzle in that it’s sloped and slick. I don’t ever have a problem with it.

Price: $26.00 for 4.5 fl oz. This is pretty much the exact same price per oz at the Oribe one, it just comes in a smaller can so you pay less up front.

RATE: 4.5/5 STARS

THREE: Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray

Texture: This is not an aerosol spray, so you have to use it a little differently. I love this for beach hair and it gives awesome salty texture to the hair.

Volume: Because this is a wet spray, it definitely does not give any volume to my hair. I have to use this in conjunction with other products if I want volume.

Smell: This smells like the beach and I LOVEEEE IT.

Nozzle: I really like this nozzle because it’s small and easy to press and it has a lock on it so I can pack it in my bag without worrying about it spraying in my stuff.

Price: $27.00 for 4.2 fl oz. Because you use so little of it, I feel like the price isn’t terrible. I’ve had the same bottle for over 3 months and have barely made a dent and I would say I use it pretty often this time of year.

RATE: 4/5 STARS

FOUR: L’Oreal Dry Shampoo + Texture Spray

Texture: This is great because it is a dry shampoo / texture spray in one – so you hit two birds with one stone. I love that it cuts the grease in my hair AND gives it awesome grip (aka: PERFECT for I-woke-up-like-this next day hair).

Volume: This also gives amazing volume. I love the fact that I can almost completely revive next day curls with this product.

Smell: I hate the smell. I feel like this is a big part of why I don’t reach for this one as often. I think it’s over powering and it lasts quite a long time on my hair so I smell it for hours.

Nozzle: This is a typical aerosol spray – but sometimes I feel like it’s hard to control exactly how much comes out and I end up dousing on spot on my head.

Price: $5.99 for 4 fl oz. This is a drugstore product so the price honestly can’t be beat. If you don’t mind the smell, this is a great option on a budget.

RATE: 3/5 STARS

FIVE: Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair

Texture: This gives fabulous texture. It is very comparable to the Ouay texturizing spray in terms of texture and I love that it has a medium hold, so I love to set my curls with this.

Volume: I will spray this once or twice a day on curled hair to add volume when they start to go flat from the Missouri humidity and I think it does a great job.

Smell: IT SMELLS LIKE ACTUAL HEAVEN. This is my favorite smelling hair product. Everyone always asks what’s in my hair when I wear this.

Nozzle: I don’t have an issue with the nozzle at all.

Price: $37.00 for 7.9 fl oz. This is an AWESOME price when you consider that the Oribe spray was $46 for 4.5 fl oz. It’s almost double the product for less money.

RATE: 5/5 STARS

SIX: Batiste Dry Shampoo

Texture: I think this gives ok texture, but it is more of a dry shampoo. It is ok on the go but not fabulous.

Volume: It almost can’t be beat in the volume department. I love how full my hair looks after I use this product (especially because I am queen of fine hair).

Smell: Horrible. 0/10. So bad. Luckily, it doesn’t last very long so I try not to breathe while I spray it.

Nozzle: It’s normal nozzle and I don’t have a problem using it.

Price: $5.99 for 6.7 fl oz. It’s a drugstore price, and if you’re on a budget, this may be a good option for you and your hair. I give this half a star though because you could do better with other options (ahem: the l’oreal product above).

RATE: 2.5/5 STARS

SEVEN: Living Proof Texturizing Volume Spray

Texture: YASSSS QUEEEN OF TEXTURE. This stuff gives amazing dry texture to my hair. I know it seems weird being excited about dry hair but when you are doing braided styles or messy buns (or even just beach waves), the last thing you want is ultra slick and shiny hair. They just won’t hold the style as well.

Volume: This is a texturizing volume spray so I would be disappointed if it didn’t give me any volume. LUCKILY: It SO does. It is super similar to the Ouay and Oribe sprays in terms of volume and even gives great lift at my root.

Smell: It smells so yummy I don’t even mind that it lasts a few hours in my hair.

Nozzle: This is a normal nozzle. I don’t have a problem with it!

Price: $29.00 for 7.5 fl oz. This is an awesome deal and you will get a ton of use out of it.

RATE: 5/5 STARS

BONUS SEVEN: Aquage Detailing Creme

Ok, so I kind of cheated with this one because it isn’t a spray at all but I feel like I needed to mention it as an awesome texturizing hair product. I use this creme in addition to whatever spray I am using on the ends of my hair to keep them piecey and separated and I feel like my hair just never looks complete without it. It’s only $20, and you use less than a pea sized amount every time (well, I do, because I have fine hair, but at the MOST you’d use a pea sized amount), so you will have this for at LEAST a year at a time if not longer. 10/10 would recommend this to finish your texturized hair styles.

I hope you found this guide super helpful in terms of deciding which sprays are worth the money you spend on them. I know it can be hard to decide which products you should buy when there are DOZENS AND DOZENS of products you can choose from that do essentially the same thing. If you had to ask me, I’d definitely suggest the Living Proof spray, the Ouay spray or the Kevin Murphy spray. They are pretty reasonably priced while delivering amazing results on many different hair types.
