Sun protection during the summer is often overlooked by men and women looking to get a quick tan. I’ve been there. I admit…I have used tanning beds, and I have often skipped sunscreen completely so that I can get that first ‘summer burn’. But recently, I was reading about the damage that happens to your skin when you get a sunburn and I could NOT believe I was putting my body through that. I want to be tan, but it is possible to get that coveted sun kissed look without also getting skin cancer.

3 Ways To Protect Yourself From The Sun
Everyone knows that sun exposure can give you cancer, sunspots, premature aging and nasty sunburns. So what are some ways to avoid this over-exposure and keep your cool this summer? Read on to hear about the top 3 best ways to beat the heat: sunscreen (obviously), sun hats, and sunglasses.
Sunscreen.
The number one factor to be aware of when purchasing sunscreen is this: any SPF count higher than 30 is kind of a lie. SPF 30 is as high as science will comfortably back in skin protection. In fact: lots of people mistakenly believe that sunscreen with a higher SPF protects them for longer, meaning they don’t have to reapply as often. This can lead to severe sun burns and skin damage. So do yourself a favor and make sure you are reapplying every two hours to keep your skin protected. Peeling skin is NOT attractive!
Sun Hats.
Lucky for us, floppy hats are in SERIOUS style right now. they are perfect to wear on the beach and at the pool. You don’t have to sacrifice looking fashionable to protect your skin (something I am just recently learning). They come in a million colors and it is easy to dress them up. Another option if the floppy hat just isn’t for you is the good old stand-by: the baseball cap. I LOVE baseball caps. They are cute and functional. I have three in different colors so that I can always match what I’m wearing.
Sunglasses.
Here’s the thing. Your eyes need just as much protection as the rest of your body. The sun’s rays can harm your vision and give you cataracts, corneal sunburn, or macular degeneration. It is also possible to get cancer of the eyelid (which I would not personally be too stoked about). Does any of that sound like a good time to you? Didn’t think so. Grab your cutest pair of sunnies and rock those lenses.
Do you have a favorite floppy hat, sunscreen brand or pair of sunglasses? Let me know in the comments below! I would love to add to my collection. 🙂 Be sure to tag me on instagram so I can see all of your cute hats and sunnies! I’m always looking for ways to protect my skin and look flawless while doing it.
P.S. here is a quick tip for you ladies out there: make sure your foundation has sunscreen in it! The skin on your face is the most sensitive so it is important to make sure that it is ALWAYS protected. Try Benefit’s “Hello Flawless!” Oxygen Wow Liquid Foundation! It is SPF 25 and it has amazing coverage!
I’m definitely one of those that burns within ten minutes of being in the sun lol! Protecting yourself is such a priority!

Girl — ME TOO!! It is the worst!
Great Advice! Skin Protection is very important. Glad to see you bringing awareness.
Thanks!! It is so important that we take care of our bodies!!
This is so important, especially for summer! Using these tips for a beach trip in a couple weeks!
So glad!!! Invest in a floppy hat — perfect for the beach!!!
Great advice! I’m guilty of using tanning beds also and little to no sunscreen on my face. It is extremely important to use protection though. You are so right!
I know girl. I am definitely guilty of using tanning beds…but I’ve made a pact with myself not to do that to my skin anymore!
I couldn’t agree more. Aside from sunblock which I see as a given, it baffles me that people let kids (and themselves) run riot under the blistering sun with no hat on! Such an important post.
Thanks Amy!! It completely blows my mind too!
Totally Agree! Great tips!
Thanks!!! Glad you stopped by 🙂
Good point about protecting your eyes. I never really thought of that.
It is so important!
I often forget to grab my glasses when heading out, but your absolutely right. The sun can harm my eyes just as bad as the rest of my body. Thanks for the reminder, they’re cute and protective =]
No problem!!! 🙂 They are cute and protective!!
I just got back from vacation four days ago and my stomach got so burnt. You are so right, it is NOT fun!
NOT AT ALL!! Sunscreen is your best protection!
As somebody who is naturally ghostly pale, I am a sun protection FREAK. I never leave the house without being head-to-toe covered in SPF 50+ and I almost always have sunscreen in my bag so I can reapply every 2 hours on the dot.

I’m so glad you take it seriously!! Not enough people do!!!!
This is great to read after all the news stories that sunscreen is “bad” for you. I love the fashionable side of protecting your skin.
Me too Kabrina!! 🙂
I live in the tropics, it’s always sunny and man, I stay vigilant about sun protection–I even wear a long-sleeved rashguard when I swim because it’s just not worth getting burned!
SO TRUE!! I think thats an awesome idea!!
Great post and so important! I burn so easily and carry 50+ SPF with me all the time, just in case.
Me too! All my makeup has SPF just in case.
Protecting myself from sunburn is the first thing to do when I come outside.
